We Broke Ground (So To Speak)!

I'm all giddy and uber-excited because today, or rather, as it is currently 4:55 a.m., yesterday, I broke ground on Retrospectacular, in a manner of speaking. Yes, we've been making our lists, we've been checking them twice, and all that goodness, and other stuffs nice. However, we have yet to do anything of real significance (though that will be changing very shortly, in the next week or so, I hope... be ready for some notecards and IMs folks, because we're comin' a'knockin'). But...! But...! But...! Well, I bought the first building for this year's Retrospectacular to Benefit NAMI. One that I hope we'll be able to use as a punk club. YAY!

Now, this might not seem of all that much significance to you, however, it was something I did that felt tangible to me, that produced results that I could see and walk through, that I could imagine transformed and start making plans for. It made me feel like I had actually taken a step forward and accomplished something, gave me that shove I needed, that oomph, to be ready to tackle the task at hand. So, folks, be ready for me to start going into work-mode in the next few weeks. After all, have you checked your calenders lately? This year's Retrospectacular is a mere 11 weeks away. Now that may sound like tons of time to you but to me, it sounds like a heartbeat. I'm a slacker and a slow worker and I like to start things early so I can take my time in the beginning.

Anyways, point being, I got something done and I'm proud and I wanted to share my excitement and enthusiasm with you all. The Retrospectacular to Benefit NAMI's proceeds go to a wonderful charity close to my heart, The National Alliance On Mental Illness. I hope in the coming weeks to talk to many of you about how you can help make this year's Retrospectacular the roaring success that last year's was. For more information and/or to volunteer in any way/shape/form (pariticularly if you're a content creator or dj), contact me, Katelynn Dastardly, or Alicia Falworth by IM or notecard inworld.

Didja Know? (NEW MUSICS)

That beaucoup de new albums were released in the past couple days (primarily yesterday)? If not, now ya do. Of note, imho, are Caribou's Swim, Delorean's Subiza, Horse Feathers' Thistled Spring, Kings Go Forth's The Outsiders Are Back, The Radio Dept's Clinging To A Scheme, and last, but most certainly not least, The Apples In Stereo's Travellers In Space And Time (yay)! All of which are available for download on emusic.com and amazon.com (except for the Horse Feathers album, which you can order on CD), and which I'm sure you all have other means of acquiring, including getting 'em at your local record shop, so go out and do it, one way or another (especially the Delorean and The Apples In Stereo, my top two picks, atm). Yay for new musics!

New Poem - An Ode To The Jackpot, 4-18-10`

So, I had a poetry challenge to write an odd ode. Also, my favorite local dive bar just closed. *insert sad face here* So, I wrote and "odd ode" to it. I think it's aight, at least. Judge for yourself.

An Ode To The Jackpot

you banned me at least once
but i came back and you let me through your doors
i loved you more for it

we danced to 80s music on your grimy floor,
our feet slipping on spilled beer.
death masks above your booths on blood red walls -
were you tryijng to tell us something about life?
or about frequenting dive bars and claiming to be oh
so cool?
that posturing and posing, spouting bs that sounded pretty
killed a bit of our souls.
oh no, that couldn't be what you meant,
not you,
with your pithy and cerebral graffiti mixed in
between the "i love kevin type" scribblings on the bathroom walls.
not you, with your hipster bartenders and djs.
not you, with your trendy beer selection.
or were you just pandering to your crowd?

now, after your soon-to-be legendary last hurrah,
where various local celebrities rubbed elbows
with your average bearded, shaggy-haired hipster,
where people tore the death masks off those deep red walls,
where you ran out of beer,
you've gone down like the titanic
the dj spinning while the ship sank.

i spent my twenties in you hallowed halls,
wasting my days in a haze,
drinking and drugging,
loving and fucking,
exchanging blog urls and facebook addys,
writing poetry on napkins that the next day i reread and threw in the trash
(I've never been good at drunken poetry, despite stereotypes).

I've fallen in and out of love behind your doors,
wrecked and mended my most important friendships,
made mistakes and opened old wounds,
closed chapters in my life and wrote new ones,
you've seen me through a decade,
became a part of the fabric of my life,
and i loved every dirty, dingy inch of you,
which i already pine for.

New Poem: Submission, April 13, 2010

April 13, 2010
Submission

first, it was a thing without a name,
now it's a book on your coffee table
a delivery from fed ex,
a night spent with a lover.
in the space in between
it took shape and form
yet remained shadow.
it still hides in shadow,
though it's taken shape.
You keep it in the shadows,
afraid to share too much of it,
afraid of the damage it could do,
while at other times
you revel in its beauty,
its depravity,
its multitude of meanings for you.
it's not for dinner-table conversation.
you speak of it in hushed whispers
with like-minded people,
so grateful for their friendship.
you embrace it,
for so long ashamed,
now you know there's no other way you can be.
and the end,
you know no end to this.
only a beginning, and a middle that goes on as long as you can foresee
filled with violence, pain, beauty, and awakening
over and over again.

Friday Fight Club at The Laundromat: Me vs. Mzdeedee Dagger - April 2, 2010

This Friday I had the immense pleasure of participating in what seems to be becoming a regular event at Mzdeedee Dagger's club, The Laundromat - Fight Club! Two djs, head-to-head, for two hours, in three-song increments. The build (a makeshift boxing ring, of course), is incredible, as are the animations. I fought Deedee herself, and she aptly dubbed the bout "The Battle of the Boobs" and yes, we both ended up topless in fairly short order. We used the "catfight" anims built into the mat, and these are guaranteed to put on a good show for even the most skeptical viewer. The frantic pace of the chat, anims, emotes (yeah, we hammed it up but good), and dj handoffs made for one helluva show. If you ever have an opportunity to go to one of these events, DO EET! SO MUCH FUN! And, lawl, that Deedee sure puts up one helluva fight. Quite the formidable opponent, she is. Who won? Well, the screaming fans did, of course! There are no winners in Fight Club, or rather, everyone is a winner, as it's all done in the name of fun. Yay! Here are my songs only, remember, after each of my rounds, Deedee played three songs as well before handing it off to me again, though I had the pleasure and privelege of both starting the fight off and ending it... Well, sorta, Deedee finished the night off with the official fight club song (which I can't recall at the moment - bad Kate! *slaps self on back of hand*). Anyways, without any further ado, my tuneage:

Round One:
Fight For Your Right - Beastie Boys
